The importance of working with a COR®- certified company

Not only are forklifts, pallet jacks, and utility vehicles critical to your operations, they can also be dangerous to operate if the operator is not properly trained, or if your warehouse isn’t properly designed. When choosing a material handling company, be sure it holds a Certificate of Recognition (COR®). Here’s why it’s essential to work with a COR®-certified company.

What COR® means

COR® is an occupational safety and health accreditation program that verifies a fully implemented safety and health management system which meets national standards.”

The program aims to prevent and mitigate workplace injuries by providing industry employers with the tools they need to develop, implement, assess and promote the continuous improvement of their safety and health programs.

The program is nationally registered, endorsed and trademarked by the Canadian Federation of Construction Safety Associations (CFCSA) and delivered through provincial member associations.

How companies get COR® membership

Obtaining a COR® membership is a challenging, multi-step process that ensures a company takes every step it can to ensure safety among its employees. To obtain a COR® membership, you must:

  • Complete four training modules which provide the information, resources and ability to design and implement a safety and health management system
  • Design and develop a safety program, including training strategies, designated safety officers or coordinators, back-to-work plans and safety awards programs
  • Renew your membership every three years and have your safety program audited annually to ensure all national safety standards are met

Why COR® is important

COR® membership is voluntary and indicates that a company goes above and beyond the provincial legal requirements and takes a best practice approach to implementing health and safety programs and return-to-work programs.

When choosing a material handling company, you must pick a company that makes safety a top priority. If a company doesn’t have a COR®, you need to wonder what other corners it may be cutting or if its safety and training programs are the best they can be.

Choosing a COR® member company ensures you’re working with an organization that takes safety seriously and ensures its equipment and processes meet or exceed national safety standards.
