Walkie Forklift vs. Traditional Forklift: Which Is Right for Your Business?

forklift

With the forklift market getting bigger each year, there are even more types of forklifts to choose from, making your decision as a business owner even more challenging.

Should you get a walkie forklift or a traditional forklift? Which one is right for your business? Keep reading and we’ll fill you in on what you need to know to make a decision.

What Is a Traditional Forklift?

A traditional forklift is very versatile, and you’ll want to use it if you’re going to need a two-shift operation. The operator will sit inside the cabin, which reduces any worker fatigue from having to stand while operating a walkie forklift.

This is what most people think of when they think of a typical traditional forklift. You’ll use this forklift to load and unload pallets, many of which can lift thousands of pounds of weight.

These forklifts are best for transporting or raising items that are over short distances.

How Are Walkie Forklifts Different?

A walkie forklift is not like a traditional forklift. The main difference is that they don’t have operator cabs.

Instead, the operator needs to stand right behind the machine, which is why it’s referred to as a “walk-behind” forklift. There’s an attached handle that can be used to manually steer it. The walkie forklift isn’t as maneuverable, and it doesn’t have the power and speed of a traditional forklift.

However, the main benefit is that it can reach higher areas than a normal forklift. These are typically used when you need to reach pallets that a traditional forklift can’t reach.

Each Type of Forklift Has Its Benefits

There are benefits to both types of forklifts. Walkie forklifts might be easier to use, and you don’t need a license to be able to operate that one.

They can also be more affordable, meaning that they’re an easier investment if you’re just starting out. These machines are also easy to operate and can maneuver into tight spaces.

They also offer more visibility for the operator, so they could be considered a little bit safer as well.

Which One Is Right for You?

You should take into consideration the environment in your warehouse and what you are going to be using the forklift for.

  • If you have a tighter space, a walkie forklift may be better because a traditional forklift needs more room to navigate and make turns.
  • If you’re going to be moving heavy loads all day for long periods of time, a traditional forklift is better equipped for durable use.
  • If you’re going to be lifting loads and pallets for shorter shelves, a walkie forklift will work perfectly fine. A traditional forklift is used for reaching higher spaces.
